Foster's 20th Anniversary

This week we celebrate the 20th anniversary at Foster”s Market. It”s hard to believe we have been part of this community for so long. I knew when I came to Durham it felt like home and we appreciate all of you for embracing and supporting us over the years. I wanted to share some of the photos form the early years

and my favorite story written by a customer, which I think sums up Foster”s now and then. I love the honesty of the story, thanks Ernie for a great story Read the full story
One of the things that has grown with us over the years, and I often get phone call and emails to find out the name is our ” Lady Banks Rose” bush IMG_3320_2
It is usually in full bloom early May and takes over the front corner of the market

Thanks to all of you for coming to Foster”s, maybe for your first time or maybe for 20 years. We hope you keep coming back- Sara and Peter

Sara – What a joy to see pictures from the early years! It brings back memories of running food up and down the stairs, gathering herbs and flowers from your garden and the way the sunlight would stream through the front doors of the Durham store as we prepared to open for Sunday brunch.
When I moved to N.C. in 1994, I interviewed at many places before parking myself at your lunch counter and convincing you to hire me. There was the beautiful food, the talented staff but more than that there was the sense of family and home. You’ve never lost that.
I admire your immense talent and perseverance and wish you continued success, health and happiness.
    Love,
    Beverly Sutton

  2. Happy Anniversary!!! Whenever we are in North Carolina or traveling through, we go out of our way to stop and eat here! Your cookbooks are my favorites and the food is always a delight. My children love the Market too. I can’t wait to visit again!

  3. My first visit to Foster’s was day one or shortly thereafter. I’m not a fan of fast foods so I’ve always enjoyed the salad selections. Working in the corporate world, I would often bring clients to lunch and they were always delighted by their dining experience at Foster’s. I relocated to Atlanta in ’98 and lived there for a number of years and despite the numerous restaurants, I never found a “hangout” quite like Foster’s. On my return visits to NC, Foster’s was always my first stop. I left the corporate world about three years ago and moved back to NC when my first granddaughter was born. I often wanted to take a part-time job; however, just couldn’t find the right fit. During a visit last August to Foster’s, I decided that this was where I wanted to work — so I now work part-time as cashier and love it!

  4. Happy anniversary! Thanks for sharing Ernie Padron’s “My Favorite Wooden Market” story — what a great description.

What’s the biggest thing that’s changed in 20 years? What’s stayed the same since 1990?

I had been checking your 1st book out of the library several times when school teacher friends I met for coffee every week gave me a copy for a gift. I’ve made several recipes from that and your other books, often bringing them into school to share with my co-workers. By far the most popular has been your Foster’s Brownies.
The fat free black bean dip and roasted spaghetti squash are also grat recipes. Thank you for all your efforts !!
